John Preston: Tetragrammaton. There's nothing we can't do

-Equilibrium Script

Following an apocalyptic Third World War, the strict government of the dystopian city-state Libria has eliminated war by suppressing all human emotion. In the monochromatic and sedate society, artifacts from the old world are destroyed and the population is required to use sedatory drugs. Grammaton Cleric Preston, a man trained to locate and arrest those guilty of feeling emotions, finds himself abandoning the drug and experiencing outlawed feelings. As he struggles to contain his feelings from his superiors, colleagues, and family, Preston finds himself drawn into a sinister world of double-crossings and lies, and becomes an unwitting pawn in a sophisticated plot which ultimately changes the repressed society forever.

Sometime in the Distant future after a presumably devastating Third world war the governments of the world have either vanished or embraced the philosphy of Father the fanatical leader behind the leadership of the tetragrammaton, a ruling state that controls the city and citizens of Liberia. Having come to the conclusion that mankind is inherently corrupt, they have put in place a method of control involving the complete supression of artistic endeavors (Art/Music/Literature/Video Games/Movies and Film/Roleplaying Games/Internet blogging sites). And the supression of the human desire to create such endeavors via a drug called Prosium.

In order to accomplish enforcement in this supposedly perfect society, the tetragrammaton uses a branch of police/gestapo enforcers called "clerics". The name tetragrammaton comes from the YHWY, or the Hebrew name of god (wikipedia. pg. 2). and the clerics act as a sort of priest/shaolin monk (in terms of enforcement) of it's teachings.

Liberia is a large city, surrounded by several miles of vast emptiness called "The Nethers" by Liberian Citizens. Beyond the Nethers (it's discussed briefly in the script) is said to be a vast and unending wasteland of desert, presumably an afteraffect of the devestation of the third world war.

The primary weapon of Clerics everywhere is Gun Kata. A combination of Martial Arts meets Modern Combat weaponry, Gun Kata is designed to give the user the best lethal cover while staying out of the way of the trajectories of return fire. It is developed by Kurt Wimmer solely for the purpose of the film.

The Tetragrammaton classifies Material based on a rating of EC-10. (Emotional Content-10) akin to the modern rating of NC-17. (Mun note:Someone from the UK can correct me on this, but the European movie rating system does not have an "R" rating. It jumps straight to X which resulted in a very funny conversation about X-rated wallace and Grommitt between the mun who is a movie theater employee and a British guy)Because of the strict rules imposed by the Tetragrammaton, Everything created without a purpose (IE-Television shows, Movies, art, Music, Literature, Drama. Things generally fictional and creative) is to be destroyed on sight and the individual posessing said object is to be incarcerated pending execution in the city furnaces.

The film opens with a raid in the Nethers conducted by the Tetragrammaton Team of Cleric Errol Partridge (Sean Bean) and John Preston. Understandably, the resistance (there's always a resistance) is slaughtered and a valuable find (The mona Lisa) is recovered and destroyed by the team in accordance with the EC-10 laws of Father's state. Partridge confiscates a book of poetry by Yeats. Once preston learns that Partridge has gone off the dose he confronts his partner in an abandoned cathedral in the Nethers. The two have a somewhat philosophical discussion and Preston ultimately executes Partridge for the crime of sense offense. Preston is then introduced to his new Partner, Cleric Andrew Brandt, a general suckup and wiseass who boasts an almost paranormal ability to detect sense offense (he's bluffing obviously) and who declares that he'll make his career with Preston.

It's made clear that Liberia is not a warm and fuzzy (obviously) happy place. Preston suffers from reoccuring nightmares stemming from when his spouse was arrested four years previously for sense offense. His Son Robbie is poised to turn him in at any turn if he shows any sign of sense offense and his daughter Lisa doesn't speak-or at least doesn't speak to him. Distracted (perhaps by this dream and the disturbing voice of Partridge that now accompanies it, Preston accidentally misses his morning dose of prosium and begins to feel.)

During a second raid, a woman named Mary O'Brian is arrested and interrogated by Preston. Their relationship forms the course of the rest of Preston's actions. A connection is revealed between Mary and Partridge when Preston is ordered to further examine Cleric Partridge's supposed defection to the resistence, and Preston (now experiencing the full force of feeling) discovers that his Partner and this woman were lovers. Through Mary and through Partridge (or at least his memory) Preston gets in contact with the resistence and plans to assassinate Father himself.

However, the Tetragrammaton is not without resources, and despite the strict adherance that the leaders force the population into-it is clear that key ranking members of the Councillary are off the dose and ruling the country through corruption and greed. Preston, in an effort to save an innocent life (the puppy! squee!) is forced into murdering an entire Nethers team of sweepers (the low level grunt Cannon fodder employed by the powers that be)the horror is exemplified by the execution of Mary O'Brian. Despite the odds against him, Preston manages to implicate his partner Brandt in the crime committed and continues to plan the assassination of father.

During the course of the investigation into Preston, his home is searched by sweepers. It is during this event that his son Robbie comes to his aid-Robbie having ceased his interval four years ago upon his mother's death along with Lisa. This is a major revelation for Preston, who now fully accepts and knows what he has to do in order to keep his children safe, secure, and human in the end.

After achieving the access to father that was needed, Preston discovers the truth behind Liberia. Father, like most maniacal and yet great leaders, is nothing but a figurehead, the real father having died several years previously. Instead, father is a role played by a select member of the Councillary, Vice-Counsel Dupont. Preston, phased only briefly, kills Dupont and ushers in yet another revolution, one that will perhaps bring about the peace and balance mankind has been seeking.

Cleric John Preston is considered the best that the Tetragrammaton has to offer. Called a "prodigal student" by those in power, he excels at everything that the tetragrammaton trained him in, from Gun Kata to Intuition. Preston is said to have an uncanny knack for being able to tell whenever a person is "feeling" or "off the dose". He is a widower with two children (Preston, Lisa and Preston, Robbie) his wife having been incarcerated and incinerated four years to the date that the story takes place. His partner (as the story begins) Is Cleric Errol Partridge, the Tetragrammaton's former favored son, now mentoring it's younger generation. When Partridge is executed, Preston takes on the role of mentor to Brandt, Cleric Second Class.

(I'm just going to speculate here, but I'd imagine that the Clerics have a sort of Jediesque method of training other clerics. There are two classes (as far as we know) first class and second class. A second class Cleric (Brandt) is paired with a first class (Preston) and the first class trains the second class until he's promoted and can take on trainees of his own. And it's scary that I've taken up time to think about this)

Preston's appearance is nothing noteworthy considering Liberians, and Liberia in General. He appears most often in his clerical robes which looks like something that Neo decided to wear in the second matrix movie (I have COME to this conclusion. They both came out the same year right?? They both agreed on it. Dark anti-heroes and their priestlike raiments.)When not working he enjoys and boring discussions on liberian history, gun matinence, and he prefers to dress a little something like This For formal occasions Preston sports This Nifty outfit that comes complete with a ceremonial sword to stick in people. He is considered highly athletic, practicing both Shinai and Gun Kata on a daily basis.

-Here is a list of some of the most important people in Preston's life and why they're important-
(You get my firstborn child if you pick up and app one of these puppies. please oh please.)
Errol Partridge:Played by Sean Bean (And you wonder why I watched this movie in the first place?) Errol Partridge is the all around "nice guy" who favors a more measured approach to the tetragrammaton's iron fist. Believing in art with the soul of a poet, one wonders what the poor guy did to get stuck in a dystopia in a past life.
Andrew Brandt: And yes, his name IS Andrew. You can look it up. He's your basic suckup/kissass (does the distaste for him show? no really) he heroworships preston to the point of it being ridiculous, but when it comes right down to it he's not afraid to stab his new partner in the back.
*mutter* bastard */mutter*
Robbie and Lisa Preston: Preston's children, Robbie is the spitting image of his father (but he acts more like Partridge, which if I were any other person would make me wonder but- *shrugs*) right down to his devotion to duty. Lisa we hardly meet. It is assumed she is the sweet and innocent girlchild of Vivianna and Preston.
Mary O'Brian:A sense offender Preston arrests, interrogates, and ultimately falls in love with (cut him some slack, he'd just started the whole emotional thing) Mary is a freedom fighter for the resistence, Partridge's former lover, and Preston's um...paramour. It's debatable what they're relationship is, since most people prefer to prestonxpartridge. *shrugs*
Vivianna Preston:Preston's deceased spouse. Arrested for the crime of sense offense and he defended her. awww.
There's tons more but I'm too lazy to list and provide pictures for them all. Once again, pupping/munning one of these fellows is absolute love and the promise of a firstborn child, possibly second.

As far as canon goes, as usual I play must of my characters at the start of their storyarch because it makes for more interesting fan/character development. Ergo Preston is alive (and if the Milliways gods grant my prayers he'll be joined by a Partridge/EQ cast) and kicking-fully supporting the tetragrammaton.

Now. Preston's a main character and I don't like dark anti-hero main characters (well, I do. But I don't think others do and here's why)because they seem to be superpowerful and the like. I have no intention of doing Gun Kata posts with anyone because (believe me on this) I've done it and they're a pain in the ass to right. I have no intention of abusing prestonpup in any way shape or form or asserting the ultimate and final superiority of the tetragrammaton by trying to take things over. I desperately would LOVE to play an actual canon rp-game for Equilibrium, but sadly I jumped on the bandwangon far too late in life and all the real hubabaloo for the movie's dead and gone.I guess the point that I'm trying to make (or that I was trying to make when I typed this up at 3:00 am) Is that I have no interest in "twinkage" and that I take every pain possible to slay godmodders whereever they're found. *cough* So now that I've completely embarassed myself-lets move on hmm?
(I think all muns should have to write a little disclaimer like this. It's just my personal opinon. If it offends anyone I'll gladly take it down because...yeah. paranoia.^^)

Besides, most Wimmer fans are waiting for Ultraviolet right?

John Preston is from Equilibrium, and is the property of Kurt Wimmer, Jan De Bont, Lucas Foster and Dimension Films. He appears here solely for the purpose of role-playing in [info]milliways_bar, from which no profit whatsoever is being made. I firmly believe that if I tried to claim credit for the creation of the character, not only would Kurt Wimmer and Dimension Film's legal staff come after me, but so would George Orwell's reanimated spirit, and the zombified corpse of Aldous Huxley. Not mine.

This also, is no relation to the version of Cleric Preston who I play at [info]theatrical_muse That journal can be accessed at [info]prodigalcleric poke there for [info]sages_of_chaos and [info]theatrical_muse information.

If you have an urgent need to contact the mun then feel free to bother her over at her reallife journal [info]policepenguin.
